What Is It?
Tirzepatide, known as a “twincretin,” is a first-in-class dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist — a synthetic peptide that can significantly reduce blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity, as well as reducing body weight by more than 20% and improving lipid metabolism.

How Does It Work?
After eating, the body naturally releases two gut hormones — GLP-1 and GIP — to manage blood sugar and energy balance. Tirzepatide mimics both at once:
GLP-1 — Slows digestion, reduces appetite, signals fullness to the brain, and helps stabilise blood sugar after meals.
GIP — Activates GIP receptors in fat cells, resulting in decreased adipose inflammation and increased adiponectin — both associated with reduced fat cell growth and increased energy expenditure.
This dual agonist activity is the mechanism by which tirzepatide significantly reduces glycated haemoglobin levels and body weight — a synergistic effect that goes beyond what either GLP-1 or GIP therapy achieves alone.

⚖️ Weight Loss The clinical results are among the most impressive ever recorded for a pharmaceutical weight loss agent. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, participants lost an average of 20.9% of body weight at the 15mg dose over 72 weeks — the highest ever recorded in a GLP-1 class trial at the time.
🩸 Type 2 Diabetes Tirzepatide was developed by Eli Lilly and approved for medical use in the US in 2022.
